Signs of Culture: Canadian Contemporary Surrogates
Building on ideas researched with the Surrogates Series, I began the Canadian Surrogates using sculptural works of Canadian contemporary artists.
When the image is created, the original work is painted out, there is nothing there but the silhouette or ghost of the original content. This project borrows from the image bank of Canadian culture while adding to that very same archive.
One of many things this series exposes is the three trends in Canadian sculpture made today: conjoined objects (dealing with concepts as diverse as transnationalism, identity, & genetics), accumlation pieces (time based, labour based & collecting) and constructions (pieces utilizing recognizable objects, manipulating them into new pieces, without losing the integrity of the original objects); all articulaing the contemporary Canadian experience.
