While seemingly mass-produced, each piece has been hand-drawn with graffiti marker leaving room for variations in each and every image. These works marry what some call high art, with the world of street signage, logos and emblems. They could be interpreted as signs for paintings. They maintain a reference to a painterliness and the handmade along with their mechanically produced appearance; more particularly prevalent in the aluminum "Silver Surrogates".
Growing up, my only experience of many famous works of art were either in books or in slides projected on the wall. Eventually seeing these pieces in real life, I discovered how much the frames added to these works. You never see the frame in a reproduction. You never get the side-view of the piece either, or what I call the objectness of the work. We can forget the reality of art objects. We can forget that these things are made of wood, cloth and paint, are lit and hung on the wall. My work explores these truths by also wrapping around the corners and edges of the canvas. These parts of the image that complete the work cannot be seen if viewed only from the straight-on textbook perspective.
